Guest Post by Rosalie Lario – Craving the Superhuman Hero

Have you seen the previews for Beauty and the Beast, the new CW show debuting in the fall? It’s a retool of the 1990s television show (which is of course itself an adaption of the fairytale).

The hero is a doctor who was supposedly killed while serving in Afghanistan. But as our police detective heroine discovers, he’s still alive, and he has a horrible secret: when enraged he turns into a beast, a monster with superhuman senses and strength.

This is the one show I’ve been eagerly anticipating all summer, and there’s one big reason why: the hero.

I admit it, I’m a fan of superhuman heroes. There’s something about knowing the hero has that something ‘extra’, abilities that no one else has, that really gets me going. Maybe it’s the thought that he’ll do anything to protect his heroine. And make no mistake, I like my heroines tough, more than capable of protecting themselves. But still, who doesn’t like the thought of being watched over? Of being guarded?

When I first created my Demons of Infernum world, I knew I wanted my heroes to have superhuman abilities. They would be stronger, faster, and heal quicker than humans. I settled on demons, but I didn’t want to have the usual take on demons: making them evil creatures from Hell. So I created a reality with multiple dimensions, where demons are a race of beings from a world called Infernum. Portals allow for travel between dimensions, and a lot of nonhumans live here on Earth. But nonhumans can be glamoured to appear otherwise, so most of the people born here on Earth go about their lives in complete ignorance of the various races of beings that inhabit their world.

Keegan, the hero of Blood of the Demon, is a half demon who works as an inter-dimensional bounty hunter. He’s tracking an evil demon, Mammon, who has designs on the Book of the Dead (a spellbook to create an army of zombies). Keegan has been sent to stop him by any means necessary, even if it means destroying the key to the resurrection, Brynn Meyers. But Keegan never expected that the one woman he couldn’t resist, would be the very one he may have to kill.

Brynn and Keegan’s journey takes them from the streets of New York City to the dust-filled tombs of the Valley of the Kings. It’s a fun and sometimes harrowing, ride, and I hope people enjoy reading this story as much as I loved writing it.
