Movie Review: Thor: The Dark World

Gorgeous Fantasy and Laugh Out Loud Humor

I knew I'd see some beautiful fantasy landscapes and gorgeous costumes when I went to the Thor movie, but little did I know how much I'd laugh. This movie is hilarious. It's so serious when it needs to be, but it doesn't take itself too seriously overall. That is why the movie does so well. The funny parts humanize the gods, and make everyone more endearing. Just wait until you see the scientist roaming Stone Henge naked while holding a long harpoon like tool, or when Thor doesn't know what to do with his hammer, so he hangs it on the wall by the coats. Or the fact that the intern's intern throws the car keys down the hole in time and space. And they don't come back.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Loki's part in this movie. He is a sneaky character with twists I didn't see coming. He's so complicated it's hard to tell if he's being sarcastic or telling the truth. Tom Hiddleston steals every scene. I felt bad for him and despised him at the same time, and that is brilliant acting. The Dark World wouldn't have done as well without Loki. Sometimes he's good, but mostly he's bad. Every movie needs a bad boy, right?

The only disappointment was Jane Foster- which is no fault of gorgeous Natalie Portman but of the writing. I wish she could have done more than serving as the damsel in distress. I know she's a mortal and can't fight like the other gods, but it would have been nice to see her save Thor or even show up that other warrior god woman who likes Thor. I wanted to see why Thor likes her so much, and all she had was a few smart things to say on occasion. Maybe she can save the day in the next movie?

The dark elves were visually stunning with their white braided hair- wish I could do that to mine- and their black spike ships. I loved the sci fi aspect of the technology in this movie. Very neat. They did remind me of the aliens in Prometheus just a little. I would have liked to have known more about them and why they wanted to turn the world back to darkness. Why can't they just live in the light like everyone else?

Overall, this movie was great fun. I recommend it!
