1.
Tell us about your new sci fi release!
It’s
actually my first published novel, so I’m pretty excited about it. It’s a sci-fi
romance, similar to your books in some ways. My two main characters are from
completely opposite worlds (in fact, my working title was Worlds Apart, which I
still love). Tyris comes from a technologically advanced and overpopulated
world, whereas Marlee’s people have been stranded on a harsh, barren planet,
struggling to survive, cut off from the rest of the galaxy. In this book, Tyris
learns about Marlee’s world, and the way her people work together to survive.
2.
The ships rely on anysogen to travel between planets. Tell us about this
mineral-energy source!
Great
question. I had a lot of history for anysogen planned out, but I didn’t end up
putting the details in my novel, so it’s good to get a chance to talk about it.
Anysogen
is trapped beneath the surface of otherwise habitable planets. However, since
the planets it’s on are only found on the very edge of the galaxy, they’re very
rare. The Colonies, the main government in Reckless Rescue, have explored only a
small portion of the galaxy, and their ability to explore more is limited by
their limited fuel. As you can guess, this makes it very valuable, and finding
some, well, that would solve just about any problem someone had.
3. Your main protagonist is hiding something from his past. Why didn't he tell his wife/girlfriend about it before?
Tyris
is hiding the fact that her participated in a protest in college from his wife,
partly out of embarrassment (protesting is looked down on in the Colonies, and
is technically illegal, though it doesn’t carry heavy penalties), and partly out
of fear of her over-reacting/leaving him because of it. He had convinced himself
that if he never mentioned it, she would never find out.
4. What are three words to describe your main protagonist?
Marlee
– stubborn, idealistic, sensitive
Tyris
– bold, impulsive, restless
5. How long did it take you to write Reckless Rescue?
It’s
hard to really pin down how long it took because it’s been very spread out. I
started the original story for NaNoWriMo in 2008, but ran out of steam at around
25,000 words. I wrote bits and pieces here and there, and finally picked it up
again for NaNo 2010. This time, I made it to near the end of the book, but then
put it down again.
It
was only last year, in around June, that I decided that I wanted to publish it.
It was far too long for one book, so I broke it up into two pieces, added around
30,000 words to the middle of it, and edited over the rest, changing the ending
completely to make it suitable for a single book. This took about 2 months.
Since then, I’ve been through it about 3 times with two different editors. All
up, the editing phase probably took about 8 months.
6. What's next in terms of writing for you?
6. What's next in terms of writing for you?
First
plan is to finish the sequel, Reckless Rebellion, and then edit it. I’m hoping
to have it ready to publish in 6-8 months. With any luck, it will go more
quickly this time, since I think I’ve learned a lot from this first
edit.
After
that, I have a few ideas for other novels set in the same world, and several
half-finished fantasy romance novels that I’d like to work on. Unless I come up
with a better idea in the meantime.
7. Where can we find you on the web?
My
main home is on my blog, at www.rinellegrey.com, where I post about my writing
journey and my books. I’m also on twitter @rinellegrey, and facebook at www.facebook.com/rinellegreyauthor.
And now for her new release:
Marlee's people are dying—the valuable anysogen gas that covers their planet is making the entire population infertile. When the council tells her she must leave her partner and choose another to improve her chances of having a baby, she’s devastated. She swears she’ll never love again—it hurts too much.
Tyris thinks he has everything he wants, despite his world suffering from overpopulation—until his wife leaves him because he is forbidden to have children.
In an attempt to convince his world, and his wife, that he’s worthwhile, Tyris goes hunting for a lost planet said to contain untold riches in the form of anysogen gas.
When he crashes on her world, Marlee and Tyris agree to pretend to live together while they try to repair his ship and escape from the planet. But as they battle the harsh winter on the planet together, keeping their distance becomes even more challenging than the snow, the council and the risks of a real relationship...
