Best new authors of 2011: My top picks

I’m running a series of blog posts on my website about my top picks for the best ebooks of 2011. I thought I’d share with you all the top authors I’ve discovered this year, and why their work interested me! There’s a good selection from across genres below.

Talia Jager, young adult (drama/paranormal)
Author of: Gifted Teen series

What intrigued me about Talia’s writing was her ability to portray teens in what I’ll call dreadful situations. She’s written about teens struggling with epilepsy, abuse, and pregnancy. These are not easy topics to discuss, and Talia was able to address them realistically in her books. I love how she chose to tackle real life issues through her characters.

Jack Wallen, thriller/horror
Author of: I, Zombie trilogy; Fringe Killer series

I never thought a zombie book could be interesting, until I read Jack’s I, Zombie trilogy. I thought of zombies as drooling idiots – really, how many books/movies can you watch with the same storyline. And then, I read Jack’s I, Zombie, I, the first book in his trilogy. What amazed me was not so much his ability to portray how one man turned into a zombie, but how the world around him reacted to his change. The sheer depth and effortless way Jack portrayed the transition of both man-into-zombie and friends-into-strangers grabbed me and wouldn’t let go.

Julia Crane, young adult (paranormal/fantasy) romance
Author of: Keegan’s Chronicles

Julia’s “Coexist” was the first young adult book I picked up this year, and she had me from the first scene. The storyline of Keegan’s Chronicles was so creative, compared to the swarms of vampire books out there. Julia chose to write about elves who live as humans, and the coming-of-age of one elf who struggled both with her obligations to her kind and her heart. I loved watching Keegan and her intended mate grow throughout the three books. There was a lot of heartache in the first two, and I’d never felt so happy about an outcome as I was about the third book in the series.

Alan Nayes, romantic and thriller fiction
Author of: Barbary Point, Smilodon, Gargoyles

Alan’s writing is simply amazing. The man has a true gift! It’s hard to describe his writing as falling into one genre, though, so if you’re looking for someone who has a little bit of everything to offer, Alan is the writer for you. His romance Barbary Point will leave you in tears, while his novel Smilodon will make you want to turn on the lights before going outside at night. I’m convinced he can write anything in the world – his writing is that strong, and his books just that good.

M. Edward McNally, epic fantasy
Author of: Norothian Cycle series

Reading Ed’s books took me back to high school, when all I read were deep fantasies with rich worlds and strong characters. I absolutely love the depth and time he put into creating this world. I felt like I could just open my front door and walk straight into what he’d created (though give what happens in the series, I probably wouldn’t want to do that!) He has the R.R. Martin style of writing: thoughtful, detailed, and makes you wonder what’ll happen next.

Shea MacLeod, paranormal/futuristic romance
Author of: Sunwalker Saga; Dragon Wars

Of Shea’s two series, I fell hard for the first book in her Dragon Wars series. I loved how she portrayed the post-apocalyptic world and the struggle between different factions of humans as well as their struggle against dragons. Her lead characters are strong and flawed, and I enjoyed watching them grow. Shea is a great storyteller, too, and her books just flow. Before you know it, you’re done and looking for the next one.

Heather Marie Adkins, paranormal romance
Author of: The Temple, Abigail

I loved Heather’s writing voice. She has a very strong one, and her storylines are some of the most unique I’ve ever read. She writes what I might call modern day fairy tales. Her stories are steeped with folklore, tragic beginnings that lead to happy endings, and characters faced with both challenges and temptations. It is no easy feat to keep me engaged long enough to sit and read a book from start to finish, but I read each of Heather’s books in one sitting.

PJ Jones, parody
Author of: Romance Novel, Driving Me Nuts, The Vampire Handbook, Naughty Little Schnitzel

PJ’s books are not for the weak! She views nothing as sacred, but she’ll definitely make you laugh, if you don’t mind the in-your-face style of humor she brings to the table. I really enjoyed reading her work this year. Her books were great to read between more serious novels, because they were written purely to entertain. She tackles the recent obsession with vampires without mercy!
