How I Conquered Fruit Flies and the Winners of Diamonds and Toads

First of all, the Winners of Diamonds and Toads are Cherie and Trish! Thank you for commenting on my blog! You'll be getting an email shortly.

Now, my rant on fruit flies!

I love bananas. I eat them with my cereal, as a snack on the go, or with strawberries. But, whenever I buy them and take them home, I get fruit flies: those little bugs that like to come out when I'm making food, or hang out near my sink.

They gross me out!

I even find them on my toothbrush sometimes. Yuck.

So, I asked around and learned fruit flies lay their eggs on the bananas. So, when you bring them home, you bring home the fruit flies as well.

Double yuck.

I didn't even want to eat bananas again.

Were the eggs on the outside of the banana or inside it?

I did some research online. Someone on yahoo said if you wash your bananas when you come home form the grocery store, you won't have fruit flies.

So I tried it, feeling kind of silly.

I sprayed and rinsed the bananas for a good three minutes and guess what?

No fruit flies.

The eggs must be on the outside. (Thank goodness- because if they were inside I don't think I'd eat bananas again.)

So, if you have fruit flies at home, wash your produce, especially bananas when you get home from the grocery store. It doesn't take long, and it will save you the grossness of having the little bugs sit all over your food.

Yay! I won. :) And that's creepy about fruit flies. I knew there was a reason I didn't like bananas.

I don't ever see the fruit flies unless we bring home grapes. They may come from the bananas but we never see them until grapes are in the house.

Growing up, my dad was getting his PhD in some type of bio-genetics. (Hey, I was a kid...what did I care what my dad did.) He had tubes stuck in the back of the refrigerator with fruit flies in them. I think they were studying reactions to the cold or something.

But as a result...I think I have a slightly higher than normal tolerance of fruit flies. :)
