Snarky Comments

I just blocked a user to my blog. I never thought I'd have to do it, but her comments didn't come across as supportive, and on my other blog she even seemed to make fun of my post.

Has anyone had to do this before?

As a blogger I'm always polite, and I only comment on a post if I have something positive to say. Why bring more negativity to the world around us?

Hmm... I haven't had to. But I have some friends who run political blogs who do so on a regular basis. Politics seems to bring out the worse in some people.
Your unflagging politeness is one the things that makes you shine.
Hope things like this will only happen to you rarely. Cheers.

Ouch, that stinks. I haven't had to do this yet (except for spam), but I definitely agree with you. No one needs to be spreading negativity all over the place.

That's why I have comment moderation. It happens rarely but I sleep better at night knowing I can filter all comments.

Ick. Never had to do this. And I'm sorry *you* had to.

I'm sorry you got a snarky commenter. A comment can always be deleted, but repeated ones and I don't blame you for blocking.

And I can't imagine what there would be to make fun of. You don't have a political or religious blog or make outrageous statements. The problem is obviously with her.

That's terrible and exactly how I feel. Why bring people down?

I really hope I never have to do that because negativity shouldn't be welcome here. I thought we were all supportive etc? *hugs*

Don't feel bad :~)

I haven't had to, but in a way I would take it as a compliment. You inspired enough passion in her for her to make a snarky comment, but also to return again and again. I'm sure famous authors deal with that all the time, so it shows a kind of lure you must have had with her. That said though, I totally agree with your decision to block her.

Aubrie, how awful. I haven't had snarky commentators, just spam and putting on word verification stopped that.

Just lately, on Facebook, I've noticed "spammy" weird things. I get a gift, everybody in my address book gets a gift...and then there's the Twitter porn stars for friends...urgh.

Oh my gosh..how tacky??
I haven't had to block anyone...I don't know that I would know how..but I have had to reject some comments.
I started 'moderating comments' after I received 22 comments on my blogs..one right after the other..all by the same person.
And..the comments were all written in another language. Who knows what the comments even were.
So..before I could get any more of them, I enabled the 'moderate comments'..and I've been able to filter anything that might be spam..etc.
Negative people are just a drag..can't abide by them either.

That is such a bummer. I've had to do this, and it stinks. I also have comment moderation enabled. Rachelle Gardner sounded off on this topic. She said that as the blog moderator or writer you owe it to the people following your blog to take action against snarky comments. And I agree. I wouldn't appreciate reading a comment in which someone made fun of one of your posts. Sorry this happened, and sending lots of postive thoughts your way.

Aubrie, I'm sorry you had to deal with that. It seems that some people are just around to make other people miserable.

They aren't happy themselves and only find joy in having others join them.

Or, they're jealous. Don't sweat it.

How sad that someone is so filled with ugliness that it cannot help but spill from their mouth.

Something tells me that jealousy paid a part in this situation of ugliness to you.

It was a compliment in a twisted way. I know. You could go a long, long time without that kind of compliment coming your way again.

Have a wonderful, healing weekend, Roland

So sorry to hear that! I've never had to do such a thing, although I had someone snarky. All I had to do was stop visiting his site, and he got the point.

I didn't know a person could block individual users. I want to do it for some spam I'm getting from the same people.

(Ugh! Twitter porn! That's what I get too, in reference to Conda's comment. I barely visit Twitter anymore because anytime I make a tweet I get hit by such nonsense.)

I've never had to deal with it - and I'm sorry to hear that you had to. I think you took the right action. It's better to just block out and ignore such comments then let their negativity bring you down.

Enjoy your weekend!

I agree with you about there being enough negativity in the world. Nothing wrong with keeping your blog a friendly place where everyone can be comfortable - expecially you!

I've run many websites, and I've had to ban people every once and a while. It's sad that it happens, but unfortunately it's not uncommon for people to be asshats, especially when it's somewhat anonymous.

I have a hosted wordpress blog, and we have the option of holding comments for approval from people who do not already have an approved comment on the blog. This lets me take a look at new comments, but my regular commentors get through.

You did the right thing. Don't give jerks a platform. They can be nasty on their own blogs. No need to let them pollute yours.

That's unfortunate, though no I have never come across any negative comments. Perhaps "constructive criticism." That's a shame. Oh well, looks like you have a large amount of loyal followers anyway!

Keep up the posts

That's terrible. Some people need to get lives! If they're that angry, seriously...

Sorry this happened, Aubrie. I haven't come across this yet while blogging. I have blocked followers on Twitter -- their profiles looked, shall we say, inappropriate. ;)

Seriously? That's terrible! I'm so sorry for you - but unfortunately internet trolls are everywhere:(

That sounds so annoying. I haven't had to do it, but I've been contemplating it for a specific person!

Lisa Rusczyk said...

Sorry you had to have that happen. You certainly don't deserve it!

I just realized my comment on the Raven and writing desk had been removed... presumably by you.

Am I your "snarky" commenter?
I don't seem to be banned though...

But the fact remains that my comment has been deleted... So one way or another you deemed it delete worthy.

Well, I do apologize if you mistook my theatrical punning for an attack on your person. That was in no way my intent.

I play with words, constantly, and the raven is a word that inspires everything I wrote.
My comment was, pun and all, my honest, though lighthearted, answer to the question you asked. Ravens are playful birds in the wild.

If you'd rather I stopped commenting on your posts, you need only say. I'd comply, no drama, no questions asked. Though I would appreciate the courtesy of being told if that were the case.

Sorry if there was any misunderstanding. Did you read my reply to your comment/question on my blog?

I haven't been blogging long, and thankfully I've never had to block a commenter. But when I read other bloggers' posts with rude comments on it, I cringe. It's terrible that people are so rude!

There was another blog I used to visit, and there ended up being a whole ton of extremely mean comments, and then, that particular blogger ended up quitting for awhile. Those of us who enjoyed his blog were sad that he quit, but super glad when he came back a few months later, but decided to moderate comments from now on. I think moderating comments is a good thing. It is too bad that there are people who can't behave themselves online.
