"When their ship crash-lands on a remote planet, the marooned passengers soon learn that escaped convict Riddick (Vin Diesel) isn't the only thing they have to fear. Deadly creatures lurk in the shadows, waiting to attack in the dark, and the planet is rapidly plunging into the utter blackness of a total eclipse. With the body count rising, the doomed survivors are forced to turn to Riddick with his eerie eyes to guide them through the darkness to safety. With time running out, there's only one rule: Stay in the light."

I choose this movie because it's a lesser known space opera and that's the subgenre that I'm writing in right now. A space opera is is a subgenre of speculative fiction or science fiction that emphasizes romantic, often melodramatic adventure, set mainly or entirely in space, generally involving conflict between opponents possessing powerful (and sometimes quite fanciful) technologies and abilities. Perhaps the most significant trait of space opera is that settings, characters, battles, powers, and themes tend to be very large-scale.

My novella, Nebula's Music was my first foray into this genre, and now I'm working on a full fledged novel to send to agents.

Thanks for introducing me to a fascinating new genre, space opera. I have always liked science fiction and this adds an interesting dimension to the genre.

I love Pitch Black, and I love space operas.

Have you ever read Linnea Sinclair?

I've never heard of a space opera either, but I love the juxtaposition of space and opera. And your description has me very curious.

There are all of these subcategories that I didn't know until recently. I'll have to read more of them. Or in this case, maybe see the movie.

Not my favorite movie, so don't draw me for it, but I couldn't help but comment, 'cause ...

Wow. By that definition, Scylla and Charybdis might be space opera. ;-) I always assumed "space opera" involved an element of handwavery in the technology - that is, it's in bed with science fantasy, bundling with the genre line board between them. ;-)

I have sons. Space opera was a serious part of growing up. And we loved Riddick.

Pitch Black is an awesome movie, as is all the Chronicles of Riddick. I own all three (surprised?) Lol. It's a great example of a space opera too.

Pitch Black was a great movie, although I thought the sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, was better. They'd always said there was going to be a third, but so far no dice, and since this film came out 10 years ago, it might not be that likely to happen now!
