Movie Review: Pacific Rim

A Monster Fest with Action Galore

Watching this sci fi, action movie is like eating bowls and bowls of candy and having the pleasure part of your brain constantly stimulated. The sheer magnitude of imagination and spectacle poured into this movie is a feast for your eyes. But, it's not all action and no plot. There are heart warming moments, along with interesting memory sharing and some funny banter between rival scientists.

So, giant monsters are coming out of a fissure in the Pacific. Human kind has come together to build these humongous robots to kill them. But, each robot is too strenuous for one person to control, so two people have to memory share to build a bridge between their minds. Together they control the machine. How cool is that? On a scale of 1 - 10, it's a 10 in my book.

I LOVED how they fit some romance into the plot, and the main female lead- Rinko Kikuchi- is pure awesome:

I wish my hair could look like that- trimmed in blue. She impressed me with her fighting skills and her determination. There's one scene between her and the male lead- Charlie Hunnam- where she has to prove herself with a bamboo stick, and she does!

The part I enjoyed the most was the clever banter between two rival scientists trying to figure out the monsters' plan. This is where the sci fi comes in, and the story is intriguing. Through their own mind sharing with a specimen's brain, we get a glimpse into the alien's world.

There are a few goofy moments- like when one of the machines crashes into a building and demolishes everything except a desk toy. Or when someone just gets eaten out of the blue because a certain monster only looks dead. But, for the most part, they took this movie epically seriously. 

With a PG-13 rating, this movie is okay for teens, but may be scary for younger kids. If you are looking for some popcorn fun this summer, than Pacific Rim is it!
