My New Work in Progress (WIP)

My Inspiration

April is a new month, which means starting a new work! This time I'm heading into Greek God territory. I plan to write a contemporary romance about the Gods Pan and Syrinx. This is largely inspired by Debussy's gorgeous flute solo, Syrinx. You can listen to the entrancing composition up above on the You Tube link performed by the talented Emmanuel Pahud, principle flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic.

The story of Pan and Syrinx is a sad and strange tale. Pan is like the playboy of his time. He's the God of Fertility and seduces maidens, nymphs and other gods. He pursues Syrinx- the God of Chastity- and she wants nothing to do with him. In fact, to get away from him, she asks the river nymphs to turn her into a reed. Pan cuts the reed and makes his pan flute from it. He then uses the flute to play a song of grief for her loss.

Very strange story, indeed.

But, then I thought: what if Syrinx tricked Pan? What if she transported to our time to get away. Would Pan come after her? Is there hope of resolution for this strange tale?

So, that's what I'm doing this month- writing about Syrinx and Pan. I'm not sure where it's going to go, but I've mulled this story over for years while teaching this piece to my students, so I really want to explore this idea and see where it goes.

What's new for you this month?

That sounds like such a cool idea for a story! I want to read!

The Pan/Syrinx story reminds me a lot of the Apollo/Daphne story where she begs her father to turn her into a tree to get away from Apollo.
