My Childhood Monster Blogfest

In honor of her new release, Fearless, Christine Rains has started this awesome blogfest in which you are to post about your very own childhood monster. Other entries can be found here.

The very first movie my mom took me to was E.T. I was maybe 5 at the time. My mom thought I'd LOVE E. T., but I hated him. He scared the heebeegeebees out of me. So much so, that when he "went home" at the end, I cheered while everyone else cried. "Good riddens," I thought.

How can you be scared of something so cute you ask?

Well, he talked in a scraggly voice, only said cryptic things, hid in the closet, had no hair, and pointed this burning finger at people. Not cute in my eyes.

Every since that movie I'd have to sleep with my closet door closed at night. The scene with E. T. amongst all of the stuffed animals, hiding in the closet burned in my memory for all time. I used to reason with myself that the odds of a fictional character coming out of MY closet were about as slim or more slim, than the odds of my childhood crush (Christian Bale from Treasure Island and The Newsies) coming out my closet. And I'd would have liked that much better!

So tell me, what was your childhood monster?

You know, you're not alone :) There's another entry for the Childhood Monster Blogfest that also had ET as the monster. I think I was ten or so when I saw the movie, so it had little impact (aside from making me love ET, of course) and I never really gave much thought to whether someone might find him scary--but you're right, that scene with him in the closet is plain creepy :) Thanks for sharing, and for dropping by my blog earlier!

You are not alone, Aubrie. A lot of very young children were scared by E.T. That opening scene alone was enought to scare the bejeebers out of a kid as young as 4 or 5.

Yeah I have a lot of people tell me ET freaked them out.

I saw ET in one of the first theaters around me to have dolby sound so I was too enthralled to be scared.

When you describe E.T. in that manner, he is pretty scary! I wouldn't share my candy with him! Thanks for sharing your monster and helping promote my novella.

You know I never found E.T. cute... I found him freaky and scary too...

I was terrified of E.T. As well!

I was older when I saw E.T. but I could totally see why he would be a creepy monster. I love that good riddance when he went home. :)

I never thought about how negatively that stuffed animal scene could impact a child, but when you look at it from that angle, it could certainly be nightmare-worthy!

Oh no! Scared of E.T.? Though I must admit, that scene where he's gone all white and Eliott fears he's dead scared the heck out of me. I still close my eyes for that scene when rewatching the movie.

Aww! That's so cute that E.T. frightened you as a child. My parents wouldn't let me watch it for a long time, so I was older before I did, but I can see how it could scare a little child.
