Gearing up for B&N Signing!!!

First of all, I'd like to say Happy Veterans Day to all of the veterans out there! Thank you for serving. I watch war movies on Veterans Day and I'm always impressed by how much people have sacrificed for us to sit here and have book signings. Thank you.

Tomorrow is my first ever Barnes and Noble signing! I'm so excited I can't even put it into words. I've driven by this Barnes and Noble store for years saying, "I wish my book was in there." I can't believe this dream is coming true. And on my birthday weekend, no less! What a wonderful birthday present.

But I'm also nervous.

What if no one shows up? I've already bugged my family about it a million times, so at least they'll come and talk the book up. But, I'm also wondering if anyone else will take an interest, or if I'll be sitting at the table with Sarah Gilman- who's also signing- just the two of us....alone with cricket sounds around us. The store manager said I have to be outgoing-even agressive. And that's just not me. I actually avoid those people in the grocery store trying to get me to taste something. And I block my face with my hand when I walk by those kiosks in the mall. I don't want to be one of those people.

What if someone doesn't like my book?
That one I can't do anything about. Some people just don't like science fiction. It isn't for them, just like nonfiction isn't for me. I can't imagine sitting down to read a history book- but my dad loves history, so that's all he reads. Last Saturday at my book signing at the Weare Winter Festival I told this woman about my book, "It's like Star Wars and Star Trek with a little bit of Pirates of the Caribbean." I asked her if she liked any of those movies. Her response- No. (Someone doesn't like Star Wars? Isn't that illegal?)

What if I sound dumb reading my excerpt out loud? I need to practice tonight. And I need to talk slowly. I tend to rush right through it, and then no one will understand what I'm saying. The scary part is that they said they'd turn off all of the music in the store so everyone can hear me. *shakes in my boots*

I'll let you all know how it turns out for me, and I'll post pictures!!! Let's hope people show up, like my book, and that I can talk like a normal person and not freak out!

If no one shows up, we won't have to read! *wink* It'll be fabulous. See you tomorrow!

Aww! I'm sure you'll do fine. If I lived closer, I would show up.

As for reading out loud, you might want to consider taping your voice as you read when you practice tonight. That way you can hear back to where you speed up or go to slow. Don't be afraid to make notes. :)

I'm sure people will show up. Oh, and bring candy. If you put out candy, people will stop by.

I've been watching my local B&N for signings and I've got to say I enjoy them all. Even books I wasn't particularly interested in before hand I ended up buying because after hearing the author talk about them, I *had* to read it.

Just relax and have fun! You're a mini celebrity to them -- meeting a real author is exciting!

Practicing reading tonight will help. :) Remember how you felt about your characters when you were writing about them? You've created awesome people. Let what you feel for them shine through your voice. It'll be fantastic.

Wishing you the best of luck. You'll both do great!!

Ah, the mall kiosk people. Don't worry, I'm sure you won't be anything like them. Good luck! And happy birthday weekend to you!

Good luck, hon! Oh, I'd be scared, too. Most of all, try and relax and enjoy the day! All you have to tell people is, oh, I did a signing there, once. You don't have to say HOW many books you signed. :)
