Movie Night and Winner of "Sam the Night Person"
The Syfy Channel is showing Reign of Fire tonight at 7pm EST. Is it only me, or should there be more fantasy/sci fi movies out in the theaters? If I had my way, everything would be told from a fantasy/sci fi perspective! Even comedies. My favorite is when they cross genres and combine fantasy with sci fi, like this movie does.
Reign of Fire takes place in the future, where dragons have caused the apocalypse. Christian Bale (who was also in the new Terminator movie and Batman) fights the dragons with a bunch of survivors at an old castle in England. How cool is that? I went to the theaters to see it in 2002, but I have no memory of what happens...hmmm is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Anyways, I cut up pieces of paper, put your names on them, turned them over and had my husband (who is totally unbiased) pick one. He choose Jeannie Campbell, who is a new follower of mine and has this awesome blog. Congrats Jeannie!

I agree, there should be more movies with fantasy/sci-fi--perhaps the huge success of Avatar will make this a reality.
I never saw Reign of Fire. I'll have to check it out. :)
Next time make your husband totally biased and pick ME!!
I hope so too, Conda! And M. Gray, I certainly will try!
I recall Reign of Fire being fun - not great cinema, but an enjoyable action movie.
Lord of the Rings has already done great things for SF / F in movies. If Avatar continues that trend, I'm all for it.
I think scfi/fantasy will continue to grow in popularity in movies now that there are such good special effects and artists available. At least, I hope!
I can't wait until they turn the Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders series into movies. That'd be so cool!
Lindsey, it was just what you said! Very fun and full of action, but not oscarworthy!
Lisa, I hope you're right!
Donna, I love Anne McCaffrey's books and I hope they do make her books into movies!
Congrats Jeannie! And I completely agree with you on there needing to be more fantasy/sci-fi. Everything, even pirates, are better off!
Hey, Aubrie. What ezines do you recommend? If you have a moment, would you mind emailing me at ladyingray03@yahoo.com?
Thanks!!
Need to check this out. I haven't seen it.
